President's Corner:
Sticking with the Underdog
-Wendy Baum-

While watching March Madness basketball, I was amazed at how many upsets occurred early on in the tournament.  Many brackets were destroyed in the beginning rounds.  Statistically, many pick the "favored" team. It is natural to make decisions on preconceived notions - past experience, reliance upon experts, or asking a friend. Yet sometimes, our first choice is not always the best selection. In picking your March Madness bracket, the challenge is committing to your first selection - you can't readjust your picks once you know a different team is moving on to the next round.  But in business, and even with personal relationships, sometimes we should be "adjusting" earlier than we do.  We stick with our original choice and don't make changes, knowing it is no longer in our best interest, because we are loyal, it will take too much time or emotion to change or it may destroy the relationship you worked so hard to achieve. In life, we have the flexibility to make a change when it no longer feels right - you are not stuck with your original underdog selection when it goes wrong.  Let's evaluate what is NOT working and make a change - it doesn't have to be a full switch, but simply a commitment to clearly communicate to someone that something needs to change.  You willfeel so much better!  Remind yourself weekly that you have the freedom to make changes.  Go for it!!

April 27 Professional Speakers of EPWNG

Nancy Tuzzolino, Erin Marcus, Maggie Bahler, Debra Feldman and Elizabeth Ury

In their spring event on April 27, the Professional Speakers of EPWNG tackled the universal and often thorny issue of aging and caring for loved ones in Life
's Amazing Race: The Odyssey of Caring for Aging
or Sick Loved Ones. Over ninety EPWNG members, colleagues and friends, gathered for breakfast at Maggiano's Old Orchard to scale the heights and explore the lowlands of this emotional journey with Moderator Julie Bordo, and speakers Maggie Bahler, Marketing Director for Gilda's Club of Chicago, author, speaker and senior specialist, Erin Marcus of Caring Transitions, NancyTuzzolino, Care Manager and owner of Tuzzolino Enterprises, Elizabeth Ury, Geriatric Care Manager and owner of PrimeLife Care, and Debra Feldman an Aging Life Care Manager and principal at Debra D. Feldman & Assoc. From Maggie's poignant personal story, EPWNG's Elder Care Specialists jumped into topics such as opening a dialogue to have direct and honest conversations about aging and end-of-life, to conquering healthcare management and doctor visits, to assessing care needs and how to decide where to age and how to pay for it. These fascinating presentations were eye opening and more applicable than many of us realized.

Based on an audience member's suggestion, EPWNG may sponsor a support network of those caring for their loved ones. Another audience member's idea of developing a match making service for our members' single elderly parents is being taken under advisement.

Thank you to all who attended. A special thank you to event sponsors: Presenting Sponsor, Whitehall of Deerfield, and Gold Sponsor, Weinberg Community for Senior Living, CJE.

April 27 Bring a Friend

Twelve EPWNG members and their guests attended the April Bring a Friend event that was held at Leslie Berkowitz's showroom/home on Thursday April 27th. EPWNG members were able to share the benefits of EPWNG with guests, and everyone learned what Kidoodles and Initial It Gifts is all about. The showroom was open for browsing and everyone enjoyed wine, hors devours and getting to know one another.

A big thank you to Randi Blume, Ashley Delaney and Leslie Berkowitz for leading and hosting the event.

May 11 Dinner at White Chocolate Grill

Thursday May 11th, eight members of the Western Suburbs EPWNG group enjoyed a delicious dinner at White Chocolate Grill in Naperville. It was a great opportunity to network and bring renewed enthusiasm for growing the West Suburban group.

The highlight of the evening may have been sharing several decadent desserts!
Thanks to Barb Yong for organizing the dinner.

May 14 Embrace the Race

On Mother's Day, 20 attendees participated on behalf of EPWNG in the Embrace the Race 5 K Walk/Run to benefit Breast and Ovarian Cancer Research for NorthShore Health Systems.  It was a beautiful day that started at 8AM for racers.  Thanks to the EPWNG board for providing much needed visors, and to Arlene Levin and her husband for wearing pink tutus!  Runners/walkers were greeted after the race by an EPWNG cheering section, massages and food. The overall sentiment was that we should do it again next year. Thanks to all attendees and supporters, as well as Elizabeth Ury for organizing EPWNG's participation!
